Desaturate between a hint of color and faded newsprint
Zero saturation is full grayscale; ~30% often still reads pink skin or cyan sky—useful when you want a neutral campaign bed without going fully monochrome. `desaturate-color` helps tame busy red backdrops, harmonize mixed sources, or free space for typography. Hues carry different lightness: navy jeans can merge into a blue backdrop, and green trees can collide with gray walls after the knob turns. Portrait-specific monochrome chains treat skin more kindly than a one-size desat pass. Preview on the brand background, not only on white. Listing thumbs versus detail crops differ: badges, promo ribbons, and price callouts that relied on color can vanish at the edge—check every crop template. A dark translucent scrim plus desat can mud the whole plate; link scrim opacity to saturation moves instead of tuning independently. Maps and diagrams that encode meaning in hue need an accessibility plan—line patterns, textures, or labels—before color information disappears into gray alone.
